Visitor Services Co-ordinator

Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga is looking for a Visitor Services Coordinator to grow our event visitors at our heritage property in Christchurch – Te Whare Waiutuutu Kate Sheppard House.

Te Whare Waiutuutu Kate Sheppard House was home to the famous suffragist during the time she campaigned to win women the right to vote in New Zealand. This place tells the story of Kate Sheppard, the suffrage movement and the legacy of social change in New Zealand. 

The Visitor Services Co-ordinator will assist the Property Lead in the daily operations of this property. The role is varied and interesting and involves co-ordinating bookings, events and engagement programmes, liaising with partners and stakeholders, sales, assisting with retail operations, welcoming visitors and assisting with administration and housekeeping. 

Our ideal candidate will have highly effective planning and organisational skills, including time management and prioritising workload in a busy work environment; good relationship building skills and the ability to get sales results; a passion for creating wow factor functions and events. Skills and experience in a relevant field such as event management, tourism or heritage would be an advantage.

The role includes working at weekends on a regular basis and on some evenings for events.

If you are an effective organiser with strong communication skills and enthusiastic about telling a world-changing story this role is for you! 

This is a full-time, permanent position 40 hrs p/week from Tuesday to an alternate weekend day. The salary range is $54,080 - $61,447. Read the job description.

Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga is Aotearoa New Zealand’s leading bicultural heritage agency. We provide recognition, protection, and support for heritage places throughout the country. We are looking for someone with enthusiasm and skill to manage properties, staff, and visitors in our varied heritage portfolio. This role sits within dynamic regional teams that champion heritage - making it relevant for current and future generations.

We’re looking for a heritage asset manager to provide oversight for our heritage properties and properties staff in the Central Region, including such places as Old St Paul’s, Old Government Buildings, and Te Pōrere Redoubt/pā in the central North Island.

The asset manager is responsible for the conservation, promotion, and management of properties, in accordance with the organisation’s strategy. This includes managing and developing business operations, enhancing visitor experiences to promote growth and diversity in our audience, delivering a repair and maintenance programme, and providing motivational leadership to properties staff.

We are seeking a hands-on manager and strategic thinker with experience in team leadership and both operational and project management. You’ll need a strong appreciation of our heritage, history, and culture, and an understanding of working in a bicultural organisation. Excellent relationship-building skills, creativity and a high level of emotional intelligence are essential. The role requires some travel and, although not a requirement, experience with heritage could be an advantage.

Auckland Heritage Properties Lead

Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga (HNZPT) is New Zealand’s lead agency for heritage conservation and promotion, and heritage property management. The Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland property cluster includes Highwic, Alberton, Ewelme Cottage and Ruatuna within the wider HNZPT property portfolio.  . 

As the Auckland Heritage Properties Lead you will be responsible for the day-to-day conservation and management of these significant heritage places, their collections, and team of passionate staff and volunteers - as well as working within the wider national HNZPT team. 

You will be responsible for property maintenance and manage the team to provide an exceptional visitor experiences, as well as liaising with partners and stakeholders. Budget management and organising events are key aspects of the position as well as increasing visitor engagement including education opportunities and revenue generation.

We are seeking a dynamic person, strong in leadership and team coordination. Excellent interpersonal skills and a love of the historic environment are crucial along with an ability to network, recognise new opportunities and manage complex situations. 

A tertiary qualification and/or demonstrable experience in a relevant field such as architecture, heritage, museums, cultural management, and/or tourism is required.

For over 20 years, our Māori Built Heritage Team has been working with whānau, marae, hapū and iwi to identify, conserve and protect our taonga places. We have a fixed term vacancy that will see you providing advice on some of the most significant taonga in Aotearoa – our many marae across the country. If the conservation and restoration of our heritage marae building is the kind of work that you value, we want to hear from you.

This could be an excellent professional development opportunity for a secondment, and we can also consider part time appointments to this role for the right person/skill set.

About the role

This one-year fixed term full-time role reports to the Kaiwhakatere Tautiaki Taonga/ Manager Māori Built Heritage under the leadership of the Director Kaiwhakahaere Tautiaki Taonga me Kaupapa Māori.

Your focus will be co-ordinating the delivery of a programme that provides support to the provision of expert advice, developing wānanga and workshops especially in the context of the traditional arts of our marae, and our traditional architecture, including wharenui, pouhaki, pātaka, whare karakia and more.

Your skills and expertise could be from a hands-on taonga conservation background, the Māori built environment, Māori resource management and environmental planning, or project management with iwi, hapū and marae communities. All these specialist areas are critical to helping us achieve improved heritage outcomes for Māori and for Aotearoa New Zealand.  

About you

Your knowledge and experience that will see you succeed in this role:

  • Ability to articulate a Māori world view and apply it to the work of Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga 
  • Your ability to advance and promote Māori values and principles in a heritage context, and heritage values in a kaupapa Māori context
  • Excellent research and writing skills
  • Understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its principles
  • Experience developing and maintaining networks, credibility, and relationships with whānau, hapū, iwi and other hāpori Māori

The Pouārahi Traditional Arts is responsible at a regional and national level for providing conservation and traditional arts advice and developing training programmes for iwi, hapu, and marae to support and promote the preservation of Māori built heritage.

Your skills and expertise could be from a hands-on taonga conservation background, the Māori built environment, or as an experienced toi Māori arts practitioner in one or more of the arts of the marae, such as whakairo, tukutuku, kōwhaiwhai, and raranga. All these specialist areas are critical to helping us achieve improved heritage outcomes for Māori and for Aotearoa New Zealand.
