Nominate a place for the List
Anyone can nominate a place for the List.
All nominations are assessed against set criteria and prioritised against other nominations. Each year a select number of successful nominations are chosen for progression onto the List.
During progression we work with applicants, landowners, mana whenua and community groups to write a report that examines the significance of the selected place. Public feedback is also sought.
The Board makes the final decision about historic places and historic areas and the Māori Heritage Council makes the final decision about wāhi tupuna, wāhi tapu and wāhi tapu areas.

To discuss a potential nomination for the List, contact your nearest Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga office.
Public submissions
We often request public submissions on places proposed for inclusion on the List and current List entries under review.
You can make a formal submission to provide feedback about any aspect of a proposed listing or its assessment report. Feedback should be submitted by email or post during the 20-day notification period.
