Your Privacy

When you become a member of Heritage New Zealand, make a donation to this organisation, buy from us, attend an activity or event, or otherwise enter into a business or professional relationship with us, we respect your privacy. The information you provide is used for the purpose for which it was collected from you, to give effect to the relationship into which you have entered, and/or the provision of the services that we have agreed to provide. We do not otherwise hold or store personal information about you for longer than is required to provide the agreed service, fulfil any obligations that may arise from the transaction, or may be expected under New Zealand law.

How do we collect your information?

We collect personal information directly from you, when you:

  • Become a member
  • Visit one of our websites or purchase anything from our online shop
  • Sign up to our newsletter or mailing list
  • Participate in a survey, promotion or competition.
  • Communicate with us, either online, over the phone or in person.

When you visit this website, we collect information that does not identify individuals, but provides us with feedback about which pages are visited, how often the site is visited and other disclosed information. The aggregated statistical information of this type may be disclosed to third parties in the interest of making the site more efficient and effective, but this will never include information which identifies individuals.

We are careful about collecting your information from other sources and ensure we comply with the Privacy Act 2020.

How do we use your information?

We use your information for the purpose we collected it, this may be for any of the following:

  • so that we can provide you with information about Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga and its properties
  • to improve or update our services, products and our website and help you access new ways to use our services
  • for internal purposes like processing transactions, administering your account, staff training and billing
  • to understand your interests and habits with regard to our services. By collecting this information we can improve our services and offer a more personalised service to those who engage with us, including our members; and
  • to allow us to administer any prizes from competitions we have run.

By providing your email address or cell phone number, you consent to us sending you information connected with the above purposes via email or text message.

How can I opt out of the newsletter and other communications?

You can choose to opt out of receiving any information from us at any time, by:

  • clicking the unsubscribe button in an email
  • calling one of our regional offices; or sending an email to any of our regional offices; or
  • If you are a member, by contacting membership services.

You will only receive email newsletters or advice about special offers, upcoming events and activities if you have expressly signed up for a newsletter through our website, by joining our membership programme or by other means where you have given us permission to contact you in this way. You may unsubscribe to a newsletter service at any time using the unsubscribe link within each email sent by Heritage New Zealand, or by advising us via email to membership@heritage.org.nz.

How can you access or correct your personal information?

Under the Privacy Act 2020, you can ask to access your personal information, or correct it, at any time by contacting us using the details below. If you wish to change any of your details associated with your membership, then please advise Membership Services by telephone or email about the necessary changes.

Who do we share your information with?

We understand that your personal information belongs to you, and that you trust us to keep it safe and secure. We’re committed to protecting your personal information. Sometimes, we will share your personal information for the purposes set out in this privacy policy. That includes:

  • where you have authorised us to do so
  • to service providers who help us provide our products and services to you, for example delivery companies who help us deliver your order(s)
  • advertising, analytics and research partners who help us understand insights about you and provide more tailored services
  • to competition partners that we collaborate with on competitions including so you can receive prizes
  • to decision makers who help to resolve a complaint you make about us; and
  • to meet our legal obligations or where we are entitled, required or permitted to under the Privacy Act or any other law. For example, where disclosure is to a law enforcement agency that is entitled to such information under its statutory powers.

Other things you should know

Your personal information is collected and stored by us. We will take reasonable steps to protect personal information that is held by us from unauthorised access, use, disclosure, alteration, or destruction. When your personal information is held by us, it can only be accessed by our authorised staff or representatives when required for the purposes set out in this Policy. Access is subject to strict log in requirements, and we have systems in place to prevent unauthorised access.

Please note that we do not hold full credit or debit card details as this service is operated by windcave and covered by its privacy policy.

Heritage New Zealand Information Gathering Standards - Transparency Statement

Section 57 of the Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Act 2014 grants Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga a limited range of powers for the purposes of investigating criminal offending under the same Act. This is the only way in which Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga collects, uses and shares information gathered about members of the public or other entities (directly or indirectly) for the purpose of detecting or investigating potential.

We take care to exercise our information gathering powers appropriately and meet our obligations under the Privacy Act 2020, State Sector Code of Conduct, and Information Gathering Model Standards at all times.
