In perfect timing for holiday listening, the popular Aotearoa Unearthed podcast about New Zealand archaeology has added two new episodes.

The two new Aotearoa Unearthed podcast episodes highlight Māori textile fragments and a new Archaeological Archive for Ōtautahi Christchurch.

Lisa McKendry’s PhD research is the focus of episode 14 (Awhina Kerr, Auckland Museum)

In episode 14, archaeologist Lisa McKendry shares about her PhD research into tiny fragments of early Māori weaving and textiles. By looking at these items from ethnographic museum collections, Lisa has been able to highlight the incredible weaving skills of early Māori. Lisa also explains how her own thirty-year weaving practice helps her test out the techniques she finds and share them with other weavers.

Dr Katharine Watson’s work on the Archaeological Archive features in episode 15 (Christchurch Archaeology Project)

In episode 15, Dr Katharine Watson talks about the ambitious project to make New Zealand’s first publicly accessible archaeological archive. The Christchurch Archaeology Project team are currently creating a database that will let you explore over 1 million artefacts as well as other reports, data and photos from archaeological work done since the 2010-2011 Canterbury earthquakes.

Keep an eye out for more new Aotearoa Unearthed episodes in 2024.
